Instructor: Bryan White

Pruning is an important part of fruit tree maintenance. With proper pruning, you can effectively manage the size of your trees to be more water and space efficient, as well as keep them a manageable size for fruit harvesting.  You can also ensure light passage to the center of the tree which will encourage the tree to set fruit there.  Poor pruning can lead to stress, lower or no productivity and the creation of conditions that make your trees vulnerable to disease and insect pests.

Join Bryan White as he completes spring pruning of his fruit trees. You will see trees between 1-3 years of age and learn the correct pruning for each stage of development.  You will also learn:

-different types of pruning tools and their use

-how to identify which branches to prune

-where and at what angle to make cuts

-when to prune

-a few tips on pruning as your trees become more mature

As part of a comprehensive microfarm system, Bryan has planted: 10 small citrus trees, over 18 other small fruit trees: (pommes, stone fruits, and figs). You will have the opportunity to see how Bryan has sited the trees on his property so they become an integral part of a permaculture system.
