Mesquite Pod and Saguaro Fruit Harvest Event!
Instructor: Peggy Sorensen

Mesquite tree bean pods from the three common species - honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), screwbean mesquite (Prosopis pubescens ) and velvet mesquite (Prosopis velutina) - and fruit from the saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) are some of our desert's greatest edible treasures. Mesquite flour has a low glycemic index and is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and zinc. Saguaro fruits boast high vitamin C, B12, and dietary fiber.

Join VPA to learn how to harvest ripe pods and store them until our fall milling event and pluck fruit from the tops of saguaro cacti. This is an onsite talk and demonstration on private land. Bring water, a hat, a sheet to catch the pods, and buckets to hold your mesquite pods and saguaro fruit.

The saguaro fruit gathering tools will be provided.

This is a free event but the landowner is requesting small, voluntary donations for their sustainable ranch project. This is a private residence and you will receive the address once you are registered.
